While bad live-action anime adaptations are far from abnormal, Netflix's Death Note was plagued by a few problems that could have been avoided if the team behind the film adhered closer to the source material. Currently, it is unclear if Wingard will return to direct the film. Though Netflix never released official numbers for Death Note, the company's CCO Ted Sarandos said the film's success was "sizeable." Obviously, despite the reception, it drew in big enough numbers to justify a sequel. The original film's director, Adam Wingard, had stated that Netflix planned to make two films from the start - assuming the first film was successful.

Although he wasn't involved in Netflix's first Death Note, he stated that he has some pretty solid ideas for where to take it with a sequel. Russo noted that he is a fan of the original manga - and thinks it's one of the best manga ever made. Despite the mixed reaction, in 2018 Netflix announced that Death Note would be getting a sequel. In the end, fans were left disappointed - many arguing that the film had little to do with Death Note beyond sharing a name. Some things, like Light being manipulated by Mia Sutton to use the Death Note instead of going down the rabbit hole on his own, fundamentally change the themes and overall message of the original work. While the film still borrowed several notable plot elements from the source material - many story beats, characters, and motivations were changed. The film was criticized for whitewashing (Light Yagami became Light Turner) and drifting too far away from the anime and manga. Netflix's Death Note was nearly universally panned by both critics and fans of the source material.
In 2017, Netflix released their own live-action adaptation of Death Note, geared toward an American audience. A handful of Japanese live-action adaptations of Death Note have appeared in the years following the anime's conclusion. The manga was followed up by a 37-episode anime adaptation, largely considered to be one of the best anime ever made.

Greg Russo, the writer for the upcoming Netflix original film Death Note 2, says that the sequel will draw more from the source material than the original film did.
